About Me

linkedinprofile.jpeg

My name is Sam Bull, and I am a third-year journalism student at Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism.

I first got involved with journalistic writing in high school, and I've since found a passion. Journalism is essential for accountability, awareness and progressive change — all of which are in low supply in our current national and international landscape. I am grateful that the work I do inside and outside the classroom can contribute to these sentiments, and I hope to carry the things I've learned and the skills I've developed into a meaningful role in the field of journalism or law.

At Northwestern, I apply my journalistic skills as a writer and feature editor for the North by Northwestern student magazine. I have taken up roles as an editor and writer but also a designer, fact-checker, photographer, team member and leader. I also serve as Executive Officer of the Sustainability Committee of Northwestern's Student Government, leading a committee of dozens of members and facilitating various sustainability-related projects, events and initiatives across campus. I've also had experience with legal analysis, spending several quarters as a writer for the Northwestern Undergraduate Law Journal.

I'm most thankful for the guidance I've had along my academic and journalistic journey thus far. A particularly enlightening moment for me was interviewing students' rights activist Mary Beth Tinker during my junior year of high school. Her words of encouragement and motivation included never hesitating in pursuit of the truth, never settling for a "decent" story, and always seeking out and working to overcome any suppressions of the free press. Tinker's words made me realize that journalism is more than just a class or a major; it is an opportunity to convey the truth in an often ambiguous world, undo obsolete and dangerous biases and empower those who are disproportionately silenced.
